Shola Should Be Able To Steal A Few Goals In New Mask

At last here is the first photograph, just put up on the Newcastle web-site site, of Shola Ameobi’s new mask – it looks good.

And after seeing the mask, we have come to the conclusion that Shola should be able to score a stack of goals in that mask – maybe he will be able to steal a few goals under the noses of opposing defenders.
The 29 year-old local lad is weeks ahead of schedule with his return from his cheekbone fracture, and that’s got to be very good news for Newcastle, as we think Ameobi can still get those goals for Newcastle.
The striker fractured his cheekbone in a collision at Fulham about three weeks ago, and only last Thursday was fitted with the new mask in Detroit.
This is what Shola said today:
“It’s going alright. With bones you have to give it a bit of time to settle and start fusing together, so I’m still waiting for that to happen,”Shola doesn’t want to put any time-frame on his return to playing in the first team, but it looks like he’ll be back training with his team-mates by the end of this week:
“I’ve just started jogging and running this week and it’s nice to be outside again. I’m just building up from there.”
“I’ve obviously been over to America to get the mask, which I’m still trying to get used to because it’s a bit awkward.”
“But once I can start getting my fitness up then I can get back into full training and get back playing.”
“It all depends on the fitness,” “The mask is there to protect it, but I also have to get used to wearing it.”Shola has played too often for Newcastle when he’s been injured, and he has never lacked courage when playing for the Newcastle side, even though he does get some stick from the fans.
“We have to make sure that safety-wise it works, it will protect me, and that I can get the confidence in it.”
“But hopefully if I can keep on working hard this week and next then I might join in training some time next week. Then I’ll probably be looking at a week to ten days from there.”
“So hopefully not too long. I’m hoping to halve the time of the recovery with this mask so it would be good for that to be the case.”
The next game after Bolton is a week on Saturday against Everton, but he could well delay his return until the game away at Stoke on 19th March.
