Shola’s Face Mask Is Misting Up

It was good to see Shola Ameobi return to training this week, as he tries to get used to his new face mask, which was fitted in Detroit nine days ago.

But it appears that Shola has had a bit of a problem with the mask with it misting up.
This is what Alan Pardew said today:
“Shola’s had a problem with the mask misting up a little bit, it doesn’t cover his eyes but he sweats up, it’s just about him getting comfortable with it,”
“The pressure points are obviously everywhere on his face other than the area and that looks fine.” “It’s a well-crafted, great product and it’s just about him getting comfortable with it.”
“We think he’s going to come back into competitive training on Monday and once he gets a jump against Steven Taylor or Colo and he feels comfortable, he will be fine.”
Since there are openings for the eyes in the mask, the misting up will not prevent Shola from seeing things clearly, so we’re not even sure if that’s a problem with the mask.
But yes, it’s true Shola needs to get used to playing in it – just like Leon Best did a couple of years ago at Coventry - and the mask he wore at the time didn’t prevent Leon from banging in the goals.
We should see Shola at least on the bench for Newcastle’s next game, which is next Saturday at home to Everton, and the Toffees are always a tough side to play.
But we’ll need Shola for the run-in to the season, and we hope he can start banging in those goals during a very important part of the season for Newcatsle.
